About Gastritis

Gastritis is a condition where the stomach lining becomes inflamed. Short-term inflammation is called acute gastritis, while long-term inflammation is referred to as chronic gastritis.

Acute gastritis is usually caused by factors such as overeating, alcohol consumption, smoking, and stress. The most common cause of chronic gastritis is infection with Helicobacter pylori.

In addition, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) are also a common cause.

Long-term infection with Helicobacter pylori can lead to persistent inflammation of the stomach lining, which can develop into atrophic gastritis, significantly increasing the risk of stomach cancer.

If a Helicobacter pylori infection is detected, successful eradication therapy can effectively prevent the recurrence of inflammation. Since the symptoms of gastritis and stomach cancer are difficult to distinguish, early detection is very important.

If you frequently experience gastritis, please seek medical attention as soon as possible and visit a gastroenterologist for an examination.

Correct Treatment

Gastritis can be divided into two types:

One type is caused by actual inflammation of the stomach lining due to factors such as Helicobacter pylori infection.

The other type is caused by symptoms resulting from decreased stomach function or hypersensitivity, such as functional dyspepsia.

For example, if there is a Helicobacter pylori infection, the treatment goal is not only to relieve symptoms but to cure the gastritis fundamentally through eradication therapy.

To provide appropriate treatment, it is crucial to identify the exact cause of the gastritis.

Types of Gastritis

A. Acute Gastritis

Excessive alcohol consumption, smoking, and the intake of highly spicy foods and caffeine can lead to excessive gastric acid secretion, causing inflammation of the stomach lining.

B. Stress-Induced Gastritis

The function of the digestive tract is controlled by the autonomic nervous system. When stress disrupts the balance of the autonomic nerves, it can lead to excessive gastric acid secretion, causing inflammation of the stomach lining.

C. Chronic Gastritis

More than 80% of chronic gastritis cases are believed to be caused by Helicobacter pylori infection. Helicobacter pylori breaks down urea to produce enzymes that neutralize the strong acidic stomach acid and produce alkaline ammonia. These enzymes and other factors are thought to cause chronic inflammation of the stomach lining.

D. Atrophic Gastritis

When chronic gastritis persists over a long period, the repair of the stomach lining cannot keep up, causing the lining to thin and develop into atrophic gastritis. As atrophic gastritis progresses, the stomach lining may undergo intestinal metaplasia, becoming similar to the lining of the intestines. This change can increase the risk of stomach cancer in the affected areas.

E. Neurogenic Gastritis

Excessive stress can disrupt the balance of the autonomic nerves, affecting the stomach function controlled by these nerves. This can lead to excessive gastric acid secretion and cause gastritis, potentially resulting in symptoms such as stomach pain, chest tightness, a feeling of obstruction, and difficulty swallowing.
